Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine has been used in the construction industry since ancient times even dating back to the Roman’s era.  Travertine tiles come in a number of textures and finishes and are traditionally white, tan, and cream in colour.  In more recent times other travertine colours have been entering the market e.g. silver and red.

Travertine tiles have naturally occurring holes and troughs on their surface which can either be filled or unfilled.  Unfilled tiles, gives the travertine a textured finish and can also be brushed and tumbled to create different looks.   The holes can also be filled with grout made from residual particles of travertine left from cutting the tile mixed with a bonding agent such as resin or cement.  Filled travertine is generally finished with polished or a honed surface.

Typically, the premium grade of travertine tile has a minimal amount of naturally occurring pits and troughs, whereas the lower commercial grade tiles have more holes, pits and troughs.   Travertine has become more affordable in recent years and is used widely indoors and outdoors especially around swimming pools, in alfresco areas and patio areas.
